The purpose of the Mindfulness Practice Community at the University of Toronto is to offer students, faculty, and alumni a place to practice and discuss mindfulness. People from all backgrounds and religious traditions are welcome. Our practice is based on the Zen Buddhist teachings of the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh. Through the practice of meditation, the study of Buddhist texts, and sharing of our experiences, insights and new skills emerge. Our group started practicing in 2002 by Ghan Chee and a group of students.

Background

Lineage

Vietnamese Zen, in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh

Activities

We offer weekly sittings on Fridays from 5 pm to 8 pm, which consist of guided meditation, walking meditation, silent sitting meditation, a Dharma talk or reading, and Dharma sharing. Dharma sharing allows us to share our experiences, ask questions, and practice loving speech and deep listening.

Biography

Our meetings are usually facilitated by Ghan Chee, who has been practicing mindfulness in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh for nine years. She is a member of the Order of Interbeing.

Is your program only open to U of T alumni, etc. or can the general public join?
If so, what time are your meetings held? Thank you.

I’m also interested in your program and am wondering if it’s open to the public. I’m currently a student at York and completed a course at U of T awhile ago. Thanks.

Hi everyone - Sorry for this delayed response but I just discovered these comments! If you have questions, the quickest way to get the answers is to email or call using the information provided at the top.

To answer some of the questions:

    Who can come?
This group is open to students and alumni of U of T. If you arent one of those, we have another meditation session on Saturdays open to everyone. See the entry on this website for “Mindfulness Practice Community of Toronto” for more information on that. The rules of the university specify that we are allow to have a 75/25% student-alumni/non-student-alumni ratio, so we try to keep to that.

    When?
    Fridays 5pm-8pm

    What do we do?
Our meditation session lasts between 2 to 2.5 hours. The first hour consists of a guided meditation(20 min), walking meditation (10 min), and silent sitting(20 min). What follows is a 10 minute break for washrooms or mindful movements (such as stretching). The second hour starts with a Dharma reading (we pass a book around the circle and each of us reads a paragraph from it), followed by ‘dharma sharing’ which allows us to talk about our experience with the practice in our daily lives.

Hope this helps, and please contact us if you have any more questions!

    A lotus for you,
    Paul

Hello All, I am presently looking for a mindfulness based meditation group/community to practice and to also receive Dharma talk/and period of questions etc. I have been meditating for many years now, based on Insight Meditation, Vipassana, I have completed Dr. Jon Kabit-Zinns course also the advanced course and the course to teach the program. I have recently been on a sabitical due to illness, cancer twice, now hepc/chronic pancreatis/weight gain etc. depression is very much the forefront. I have put my practice in the back burner, fear, fear and doubt are my best friends these days. I am hoping, and after reading your website, feel i have found the right place, or it has found me. I would really appreciate it , if someone could take a moment of their time and give me a call to discuss my needs a little further, and to offer a helping hand to someone who feels very much alone, and afraid to even go outside lately. My name is Janiine, aka, White Buffalo Woman, being part native, this is my healing name.
Kindly reply to my questions above at your convenience, i would also assume, payment, would be dana? DO you also offer retreats? DOES the University offer further courses that are of credentials? AGAIN, I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE,
    JANINE

I am trying to connect with Janine Symington. I worked with Janine in the beautiful breathworks she organized which were very healing for me. We were good friends a few years ago. I have tried contact with other friends and have had negative responses. Hope all is well with Janine.

I have read her comments on your web site and hope you can give her my email address.
